Located in the heart of Milford, PA, the Dimmick Inn opened in 1828 and is one of the oldest buildings and pubs in the state.
The Dimmick Inn has stood on this site since 1828, although the original frame structure, built by Samuel Dimmick (1793-1867) burned in 1854. The present brick building, described as Revival Connecticut Colonial, was built by Samuel's daughter Frances (known as Miss Fan or Miss Fannie) in 1855. The wing that houses the present kitchen and lounge area as well as the large dining room (the only frame construction in the building) were added in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, respectively; the exact dates are unknown. Originally the inn (also known as Dimmick's Hotel and The Dimmick House) functioned as a hotel, restaurant, saloon, post office and stage coach stop, the last as a result of Samuel Dimmick acquiring control of the stage line on the Milford & Owego Turnpike, which was the main highway to the West. The inn was a natural stopping place and it has functioned in varying degrees of prosperity and honor for over 160 years. The most colorful character associated with the inn was Frances (Fannie) Dimmick who lived between 1831 and 1910 and was described as the "biggest hearted woman ever born in the Delaware Valley." She was an accomplished violinist as well as an excellent horse woman, both sidesaddle and astride; she was an excellent fly caster and an expert markswoman. She wore men's clothing in an era when it was unfashionable to do so, and since she never married, she managed the affairs of the Dimmick Inn single handed for over forty years. A newspaper article dated 1898 stated "Miss Fan, like the waterfalls, mountains, and trout streams, is one of the attractions of Pike County." Fannie's spirit is still alive and well at the Dimmick Inn of today, and the present owner, Andrew Jorgenson, is committed to the preservation and restoration of this historic structure.
